A Moment of Calm in a Busy World

We all know that parenting is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world but that it is also exhausting. You are on duty 24-7 with no weekends off or sick days. It is easy to focus on your children and their needs consistently but if you neglect yourself that is also no good for you or them.

I am a huge advocate of regular meditation as it reduces stress, calms the mind and as a result I know it gives me a clear head and a mind-set that enables me to enjoy the day ahead and cope with what the day throws at me!

Ideally, all mums would get eight hours of sleep and rise feeling refreshed but most of us know that isn’t always realistic! We all spend so much time running around that we barely get a chance to stop and think about taking time out for ourselves. Taking the time out for regular meditation however can clear all the negative feelings and emotions in your mind and refresh and boost your energy during the day.

Being a busy mum I know this isn’t always easy but even three minutes is beneficial! It is important to experiment with a few to see what works well for you, a great phone app you can start with is one called Headspace and another one I enjoy is Calm.

Ideally I would recommend you practice this daily but some weeks as we all know life takes over but however often it is if you take this time out for yourself when you can you will reap the rewards.

There are many types of meditation but here is a simple technique you can do by yourself:

  1. Sit straight in a comfortable, quiet place.
    2. Close your eyes.
    3. Relax your muscles.
    4. Pay attention to your slow and natural breathing.
    5. When distracting thoughts occur — and they will — simply notice them and gently bring your attention back to the breath. You may have to do this often at first.
    6. Continue for 10 to 20 minutes.
    7. Try to practice once or twice daily. With time, meditation should bring a sense of relaxation, of coming to peace, and from that place of peace we make better choices.
